English 12

This semester we quite different from most english classes I have taken in the past. I’d say it was fun but a lot of work as well, not as much as expected though. I am glad that we went back in the beginning and revised basic gramma and that my teacher Prof. Rose was willing to take the time to do so. Reading many short stories, discussing and writing on our blogs, I feel helped us to feel more confident in our writing. This class was short but there was a lot to learn during this time. Many gramma assignments and summaries were done for homework and a few essays. Over all it wasn’t to overwhelming. I will for sure miss this class it has been one of my favorites so far, I hope for the best with all my classmates and my teacher.

Feminism 101

In the Blog about Feminism by Melissa EcWan she describes the feminism crisis in our society. Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, cultural, and social rights for women. This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. A feminist advocates or supports the rights and equality of women. It’s the the way you look, or talk, being gay, handicaped, driving your car, the color of your skin. Every women is different and all of them are judged.

Women are seen as a tool in a way, something that can be used and tossed out when it doesn’t work any longer. Women are always judged, more then men and face a lot of feminism on a daily basis. Go make me a sandwich women, you hear that a lot, even if its just men making a joke. Also, are you on you period, it must be that time of the month your moody. “Let’s put this shit to bed right now: Women don’t lose their minds when they have period-related irritability. It doesn’t lower their ability to reason; it lowers their patience and, hence, tolerance for bullshit”(EcWan). The your on your period excuse is dumb, if men had a period they would be worse then women, most are already moody constantly.

Men and women can be treated equal if feminism stops to a certain point, women have a lot of stress to bear upon themselves due to other women and men, you will get judged for just about anything.”Men are there to provide and discipline; women are there to care. This lie is the foundation for every damnable binary about sex and emotion in our culture—men are rational; woman are emotional—and it is on what we’ve based our pernicious refusal to regard the most destructive versions of emotions like anger, jealousy, possessiveness, vengeance, apathy, and selfishness as not emotions at all, but merely biological evidence of strength, as long as they emanate from men”(EcWan). Women can accomplish just about as much as any man, they are not weaker because we show our emotions. Kids especially, they need confidence and encouraging to do better constantly. Kids take feminism a lot harder then adults, it affects them longer. and changes them before they even have to the chance to find out who they really are or what they like to wear.

Women will always test the boundries and grow, evolve along side men.”For a very long time, women really have entered male-centered spaces at their own risk, and it really has been like entering a war zone for a whole lot of women—women who wanted the right to vote, women who wanted to work in mines, women who want to play sports for which there’s no organized women’s league, women who want their basic goddamned equality in every space—who were brutalized and subjected to all manner of indignity for their trouble”(EcWan). Women are just as capable of anything a man can do the just need the assurance and confidence as well.

No matter who you are, what you wear or what you talk like. A person is a person and we all need to treat each other equally. Treat people how you would like to be treated, put yourself in their shoes just for a moment, how would you feel? Many people are to afraid to face things themselves, so they pick on whats wrong with everyone else around them. People cannot face society, its to harsh to go out against alone, most just hide and go with the flow, never making that change for themselves.

Emergency Medical Technition

Emergency medical Technitions (EMT’s) provide and care for people through hard and unbearable circumstances, getting past the blood and guts to find the real life threatening problem is what they do. On an ambulance or in the fire service, having one’s EMT license opens doors to many different jobs. No matter where the job is there will be patient’s for EMT’s to treat in one way or another. An EMT license opens the door to many basic level jobs, knowing assessments well and strategies of treatment is what will get you a foot through the door.

Every call is a different scene with no call being the same as the next, it is a case by case job. Caring patients can injure can harm someone very easily or if there is a mentally usable patient they can harm the EMS provider. EMS is a “pre-hospital or out-of-hospital care”(Emergency Care). EMS has a wide variety of jobs, learning the basis skills is just the beginning. EMT’s are a big part of the medical field and it’s a huge field of opportunity for careers that are constantly growing and always  in need. Some of the many careers of this include: Coastguard, military, fire department, hospitals, ambulance, police departments, clinics, nursing homes and correction facilities. “Most EMTs and paramedics work full time. They are likely to do shift work that includes weekends, nights and holidays and even 24-hour shift schedules.

Sometimes EMTs must climb icy or muddy embankments or wade in water to reach victims whose vehicles have gone off the road. Although accident calls are frequent and require great skill, the majority of calls are medical emergencies not trauma-such as diabetic comas, seizures, and heart and breathing problems. “EMTs and paramedics experience a much larger than average number of work-related injuries or illnesses”(explore health careers). Also the job outlook “According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for EMTs and paramedics is expected to grow 23 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than most other careers”(explore health careers). The average salary for emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics is $31,020″(explore health careers). “Average EMT salaries for California are 7% higher than the average EMT salaries for the job postings nationwide”(Indeed). Also “Two major ambulance companies in Ukiah are Med Star (aka Ukiah Ambulance) and Vera Health.

This line of work bears a lot of stress and requires great patience and tolerance with people and all the different personalities you may have to deal with. In many places, EMTs provide the majority of out-of-hospital care. This job would satisfy me, I really enjoy to help people and the intense adrenalin rush within the job, no day is the same as the next. There are always new things to learn, not every one can expirence everything and know how to handle it.

Re-Evaluating Future plans

In my near future I see myself as an EMT, I have my EMT certificate that I obtained through Mendocino College but I still haven’t taken my test; i’m going to soon. Im still getting some schooling done as I would like to one day move up to be a Paramedic. My ideal job for the future would be a paramedic I love helping people and making things better. I work at Starbucks at the moment as a barista going on my fourth month now and staying busy. In five years I would like to see myself done with school, maybe still in Paramedic school but no more math and english. Living my life happily in a nice house with reliable cars. I want to move but i’m not sure where to at the moment, possibly up by Redding or down by Napa. I will still be with my amazing loving boyfriend and the be big sister I have bee for many years.

To get to my goals in five years I need to really focus on school, work and take my EMT test now. Also get a lot of experience with working on the ambulance and take some anatomy courses for my Paramedic. Right now my main concern is school and my EMT test. I feel that i’m still on the right track but I need to stay focused and work hard to reach them.

Adventures in Darkness Chapter One

Within the first chapter of Adventures in the Darkness by Tom Sullivan, you soon come to find three blind boys escaping from what they call a prison. being blind since birth, Tom lived in a challenging world of isolation and special treatment. But he was driven to break out and live as normal people do. They have been planning their escape for awhile, gathering supplies to make it happen. Tying multiple blankets together and making a ladder out of the window and stealing a saw to cut through the lock to the boatyard are preperations. As they eventually escape and make it down the river an a little dinghy they find themselves almost capsizing in the middle of the biggest busiest ports in America in 1959, Boston. At the end of the chapter the coast guard had found them tied his ship off to theirs and boarded there boat, shocked to find the three blind boys.

Relax. You are Not the Perfect Parent, and It’s OK to Let Jonny use the iPad.

Jessica Valenti’s article explains that technology is to involved in children’s lives. Technology is being introduced to children to early in this century, children are overly dependent on the internet and playing games on the computer. Children at a young age are supposed to be creative and imaginative but with TV and games replacing them it lacks. Jessica states “I watched a video of a baby desperately trying to”swipe”a magazine with her finger – to that tiny technology native, a print publication was simply a malfunctioning iPad. I remember being horrified (and a tad judgemental)” (Valenti). But then as she realized when “Three years later, as I finished up some work on my laptop, my 4-year-old daughter tried to swipe our television screen. “It’s broken,” she said” (Valenti). Just sad to thing children as young as 4 are overly dependent on electronics, they have replaced there imagination. With technology growing fast over the past century’s Jessica says “But the panic over children’s technology use wrongly assumes that all parents before the internet or Apple were somehow spending hours a day making sure their kids were properly stimulated. Newsflash: We’re all semi-shitty at parenting, and have been for decades.” Technology has taken away from the things kids need the most especially at such a young age, their parents and imagination. As a kid i grew up with a playstation but also I went fishing and camping with my parents all the time as well. Video games were only for rainy days! I spent tons of time with my parents out of the technology era up until I was about 10 and MySpace came into play. The teenage years were spent playing more games ant texting all the time, although outdoor activities were still done just not as much. For children now I see so much indoor activities and rarely outdoor ones. Looking a my younger siblings now I already se a huge change in the ways of parenting and activities. The seven year old would rather watch TV then go play in the rain, crazy times.

The Key to Language

The key to language by Helen Keller Talks about the amazing things the human body, even as a blind and deaf person can do. Keller as a blind and deaf person learns to talk due to a very patient understanding teacher named Miss Sullivan. She taught her that everything had a name in this world and Keller was very eager to learn them with time. Despite being handicapped, she later graduated from Radcliffe college and became a world famous scholar. Although for her it was harder and took longer than most kids to learn she still was able to set herself up for success. She is a woman that despite everything mother nature threw at her she overcame and accomplished many things along the way. Today the world can be very harsh, hard to fit in and with disabilities like this it will only make it harder, people give up. Miss Sullivan didn’t give up on Keller she knew there was something special from the beginning and without her patience she would not be where she is today. Keller is an idol people look upon with language, anything is possible if you put your heart into it.

Reserch

Paramedics arebasically a high level and trained EMT. “There are three general designations, each with its own training requirements and responsibilities: EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate and Paramedic. EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate are both expected to provide on-scene care and transport the patient to a medical facility, with the latter taking on more responsibilities. Paramedics are trained to provide additional pre-hospital care, including administering medications, interpreting EKGs and operating complex equipment.”(usnews.com) Also another site stated Paramedics provide more extensive prehospital care than do EMTs. In addition to being able to carry out the tasks of EMTs, paramedics can give medications orally and intravenously, interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs)—used to monitor heart function—and use other monitors and complex equipment.”(bls) They deffinetly don’t get paid like a doctor or a nurse, “the median annual salary for EMTs and paramedics was $31,020 in 2012. The best-paid 10 percent in the profession made approximately $53,550, while the lowest-earning 10 percent made approximately $20,180.”(usnews.com) Unlike most jobs”Most EMTs and paramedics work full time. EMTs and paramedics experience a much larger than average number of work-related injuries or illnesses.”(bls) To become a paramedic you must “The requirements to be a paramedic are extremely rigorous, so it’s not an undertaking or a career choice to be taken lightly. A paramedic is the highest level of EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification. A paramedic is trained and certified to perform advanced life support (ALS), which includes administering IV fluids, injections, medications and performing advanced respiratory procedures. A paramedic also performs many of the same functions as a basic EMT, such as treating wounds, preforming CPR, delivering babies, and performing patient assessments.”(EMS1) I enjoy helping others and working in fast paced eventfulldays with something new each dad and nothing alike.

A Cheating Crisis In America’s School

In the story of “A Cheating Crisis In America’s School” by ABC News Internet Ventures, talks about how cheating has gotten worse with students cheating on their class assignments. Half of the students in Angelo (a professor at Hunter College in New York’s) class had copied their homework off a web site, he says ” half a dozen of his college students had copied their work form a bunch of elementary school kids”(53).Today technology is another way on how student are cheating “lifting papers off the internet is one of the newer trends in plagiarism and technology is giving students even more ways to cheat now days”(53). In the story it stated that “In a random sample of high school students aged 15 to 17, 36 percent admitted to having cheated themselves.”(55) Cheating is everywhere and hopefully it goes away, its a horrible thing.

Th Teacher Who Changed My Life

The short story “The Teacher Who Changed My Life” by Nicholas Gage was a very good read. One person can make a big impact in a child’s life such as how Miss Hurd a teacher was to Gage. He explains how teacher Miss Hurd changed his life and describes coming to New York in 1949 as a nine-year-old immigrant and the challenges of learning in a new school and a new language. He credits Hurd with helping him understand English and with becoming his mentor and muse. Hurd encouraged Gage to write about what happenend too his family in Greece. His experience in her newspaper club set him on the course of a writing career, he says “she was the one who directed my grief and pain into writing, and if it weren’t for her i wouldn’t have become an investigative reporter and foreign correspondent”(51)
